Benedetto Global is recruiting on behalf of a leading Offshore Drilling Contractor for an experienced Chief Mechanic to join offshore drilling operations in Nigeria supporting projects for major International Oil Companies (IOCs).
This is an excellent opportunity for a highly skilled mechanical professional to take responsibility for the maintenance, repair, operation, and reliability of critical mechanical systems onboard an offshore jack-up drilling rig. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring safe, efficient, and uninterrupted drilling operations while supporting continuous improvement and equipment performance.
Role Description
Reporting to the Rig Manager, the Chief Mechanic will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of all mechanical equipment onboard the drilling unit.
The role requires strong technical expertise in drilling rig mechanical systems, preventive maintenance programmes, equipment reliability, and personnel supervision. The successful candidate will also support workforce development by mentoring and training mechanical personnel while maintaining the highest standards of operational excellence, safety, and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Maintenance
- Ensure the safe and efficient operation of all mechanical equipment onboard the rig.
- Oversee routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance activities.
- Maintain, repair, and troubleshoot mechanical equipment associated with drilling and marine operations.
- Monitor equipment performance and identify opportunities for operational improvements.
- Ensure proper conservation and economical management of mechanical assets.
- Support the operation and maintenance of mechanical and associated electrical installations.
- Coordinate maintenance schedules with operational requirements to minimise downtime.
- Ensure all maintenance activities are performed in accordance with company procedures and industry best practices.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation.
- Monitor spare parts inventory and ensure adequate stock levels are maintained.
- Participate in equipment inspections, audits, and reliability programmes.
- Report daily to management on maintenance activities and equipment performance.
- Immediately report any mechanical or electrical incidents that could impact drilling or workover operations.
Leadership & Training
- Supervise and provide technical guidance to mechanical personnel onboard.
- Deliver on-the-job training and mentoring to members of the mechanical team.
- Participate in employee performance evaluations and competency assessments.
- Promote the development of mechanical knowledge across the rig workforce.
- Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Quality, Health, Safety & Environment (QHSE)
- Ensure compliance with all company HSE policies and offshore regulations.
- Participate in risk assessments, toolbox talks, and safety meetings.
- Promote safe working practices across all maintenance activities.
- Ensure Permit to Work (PTW) procedures are followed at all times.
- Support incident investigations and corrective action programmes.
- Maintain a proactive safety culture throughout the rig.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Relevant Mechanical Engineering qualification or recognised technical certification.
- Minimum 10–15 years’ experience within onshore or offshore drilling operations.
- Previous experience working as Chief Mechanic or Senior Mechanical Supervisor onboard an offshore drilling rig preferred.
- Strong knowledge of drilling rig mechanical systems and maintenance practices.
- Experience supporting jack-up drilling operations is highly desirable.
- Ability to lead and supervise multi-disciplinary offshore teams.
- Strong communication and reporting skills.
- Computer literacy and maintenance management system experience preferred.
